We’ve answered the most common questions about our programs, certification, and the application process — so you can move forward with confidence.
General Program Questions
Q: What's the difference between the Full-Time and Challenge Programs?
A:
The Full-Time Program is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience in health care. It spans six months and includes comprehensive classroom, lab, and practicum training.
The Challenge Program is a shorter, three-month option for experienced care workers (e.g., uncertified HCAs, foreign-trained nurses) who want to become certified quickly. It focuses on theory review, competency validation, and exam readiness.
Q: Do I need a high school diploma to apply?
A:
For the Full-Time Program, yes — a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
For the Challenge Program, your prior work experience and resume will be reviewed instead. We may also request transcripts or proof of post-secondary education, especially for internationally trained professionals.
Q: How often are new sessions offered?
A:
We offer intakes twice a year: - Summer (June) - Winter (January) Space is limited to maintain small class sizes, so we recommend applying early.
Certification & Career Outcomes
Q: Will I be certified after completing the program?
A:
Yes — graduates are eligible to receive a Certificate in Health Care Assisting from Golden Career College. This certificate meets the requirements for employment as a Health Care Aide (HCA) in Manitoba.
Q: Is a Health Care Aide the same as a Personal Support Worker?
A:
They are similar roles, but the job title varies by province. In Manitoba, the standard designation is Health Care Aide (HCA). In Ontario and other regions, it’s Personal Support Worker (PSW). Our graduates are prepared to work in HCA roles across Manitoba and may pursue similar roles in other provinces, subject to local regulations.
Q: What kind of jobs can I get after graduation?
A:
Our graduates work in: - Long-term care homes - Hospitals - Home care services - Assisted living facilities Job titles may include: - Health Care Aide (HCA), - Personal Support Worker (PSW) - Home Care Attendant - Support Worker.
Q: What's the difference between a Health Care Aide and Direct Support Worker?
A:
Health Care Aides (HCAs) typically assist with physical care needs — such as bathing, feeding, mobility, and hygiene. Direct Support Workers (DSWs) often support clients with developmental or intellectual disabilities, focusing more on life skills, social inclusion, and community engagement.
Both are important, but they serve different client populations. Our program prepares you for HCA roles in health care settings.
Application Process
Q: Can I apply if I'm an international student or newcomer to Canada?
A:
We welcome newcomers to Canada, including Permanent Residents, Work Permit holders, and those with refugee status. Unfortunately, we are not accepting international students at this time. However, this may change in the future — please check back for updates or contact us if you have questions about your eligibility.
Q: Can I apply if I live outside of Winnipeg?
A:
Yes — students from across Manitoba are welcome to apply. While our current programs are delivered in person, we plan to offer online and blended learning options in the future.
Q: I don't have all my documents yet. Can I still submit my application?
A:
Yes — you can upload what you have now and submit the remaining documents later. Just let us know what's pending so we can follow up with you and avoid delays in processing.
Q: Is funding available?
A:
Yes — many students qualify for government grants or third-party funding. One common option is through Manitoba Jobs and Skills Development Centre (Lombard location), which offers financial assistance for eligible applicants. We can guide you through funding options based on your situation. While we don’t offer student loans directly, we’re happy to support you in applying for available programs.
Q: How long does the admissions process take?
A:
Once your completed application and documents are submitted, our admissions team typically reviews everything within 2 - 5 business days. We’ll contact you if anything is missing or if further screening is required. For faster processing, we encourage applicants to upload all required documents as early as possible.
